Student Loan Strategies

Take Control of Your Debt Strategy

Student loan rules, interest rates, and forgiveness programs are constantly evolving. Whether you are aiming to lower your monthly payment, accelerate your payoff schedule, or explore federal forgiveness programs, having a clear strategy tailored to your specific loan structure is essential.

Understanding Your Student Loans

Student loan repayment and forgiveness strategies depend heavily on the specific types of loans you hold. Federal student loans carry unique benefits, repayment options, and forgiveness rules that differ from private loans—and even among federal loans, key distinctions exist between:

  • Direct Subsidized & Unsubsidized Loans: Standard federal loans for undergraduate and graduate students.

  • Direct PLUS Loans: Federal loans taken out by graduate students or parents (Parent PLUS).

  • FFEL Program Loans: Older federal loans held by commercial lenders that often need to be consolidated to qualify for modern federal benefits.

  • Perkins Loans: Campus-based federal loans for students with exceptional financial need.

  • Private & Institutional Loans: Loans issued by private banks, credit unions, or schools with terms set by the lender.
